Miracle is usually the last alternative interpretation embraced once the other possibilities have been ruled out. But the question is, can the other possibilities ever be ruled out? Hume sometimes talks as if they can never be ruled out. And this is where he seems open to the charge of circular reasoning, of advancing dogmatic skepticism while wearing the mask of free and open inquiry. But at other times he seems to hold that in fact no miracle has ever been sufficiently attested by credible witnesses.
